Why You Shouldn’t Use Silk Flowers For Your Wedding

Wedding Tips

June 26, 2018

Today I want to chat about something that, as a photographer, just bugs me. This is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, so I want to give you all the reasons you shouldn’t use silk flowers on your wedding day. Opting for real flowers is absolutely the best way to go, and here’s why:

In the end, they aren’t going to be that much cheaper.

If you’re trying to use silk flowers to cut costs, that’s not a good enough reason. In reality, you’re probably going to end up buying more silk flowers than you would real ones to make up for the lack in the design, so the cost is going to come out about the same. If you really need to cut costs in the floral budget, then try asking your florist for less expensive options that are in season. Also think about reusing the aisle decor from the ceremony as centerpieces for the reception.

No matter how pretty they are, they aren’t going to be as good as real ones.

And your guests are going to be able to tell. It’s pretty common with most things that if you try to replace something with a cheaper, less quality version, it’s going to look a little lackluster. You don’t need a crazy amount of flowers to tie your design together and wow your guests.

If you’re worried about wasting them, don’t.

A lot of couples hate the fact that they’ll have to get rid of the bouquets of real flowers at the end of night, making it a little bit of a waste. If that’s something you’re concerned about, take that opportunity to do something generous. Many couples will repurpose their wedding flowers by taking them to hospitals or nursing homes after the wedding. It’s a really kind way to get more use out of those flowers!

And last but not least, my most hated reason for silk flowers:

Your photos will not look the same.

You only get one real shot at your wedding photos, and let me tell you, there’s not a photographer around who wouldn’t rather have you holding real blooms than silk ones. It’s definitely noticeable in photos, and makes for less quality pictures. By not stepping up on your florals, you’re diminishing your photography as well. Is it really worth it? Make your photographer happy and take the opportunity to support a florist, and buy real flowers for your wedding!
